Malta's authority-held registers
Malta keeps its producer registers with the environment authority itself. ERA is the Maltese EPR register, holding the lists for packaging, electronics, batteries, single-use plastics and fishing gear, and the number it issues must appear on invoices and fiscal receipts.
Registration renews each year by 31 March. You comply through an authorised PRO or, with a financial guarantee, individually.
What ERA covers
- Packaging: join a PRO such as GreenPak or Green MT, or self-comply, with a beverage deposit scheme run by BCRS Malta.
- Electronics: ERA draws up the producer register, with a late-renewal fee of 20 euro a month.
- Batteries: rules in force since October 2025 implement the EU Battery Regulation.
- Single-use plastics: join a packaging PRO with a unique SUP number, tobacco filters added in 2025.
- Fishing gear: ERA registration since July 2025, with a collective scheme to follow.

Producers that first place a covered product on the Maltese market, importers and distance sellers included.
How registration works
- Identify your streams.
- If a distance seller or foreign producer, appoint a Malta-based authorised representative (see below).
- Register with ERA and receive your registration number.
- Join an authorised PRO for the stream, or self-comply with a financial guarantee.
- Show the number on invoices and receipts, and renew by 31 March.
Foreign sellers and the representative
A Malta-based authorised representative appointed by written mandate is mandatory for distance sellers of electronics and packaging, and for foreign producers of batteries and fishing gear.
Beverage containers and BCRS
Drink containers have their own scheme. BCRS Malta runs the beverage container refund scheme, and producers of non-refillable containers register with it separately from ERA.
