Liechtenstein's end-of-life vehicle register - AFV

Liechtenstein handles end-of-life vehicles through an advance disposal fee collected at a vehicle's first registration, rather than a producer-registration register. The fee is administered by the Office of Motor Vehicles.

This is a fee-at-registration model; there is no separate producer-registration list for vehicles.

An advance fee not a register

Liechtenstein does not run a producer register for vehicles. This is the Liechtenstein end-of-life vehicle register in name only.

In practice it is an advance disposal fee, paid when a vehicle is first registered and collected by the Office of Motor Vehicles, that funds free take-back at the end of a vehicle's life.

It transposes the EU end-of-life vehicle rules into Liechtenstein's EPR framework through the EEA.

What it covers

End-of-life vehicles. The advance fee funds free take-back and treatment, and there is no producer-registration list to join.

Who is affected

Vehicle importers and holders. The fee is levied at first registration, and the last registered holder delivers the vehicle for treatment at the end of its life.

How it works

  1. The advance disposal fee is charged when a vehicle is first registered.
  2. At end of life, the last Liechtenstein-registered holder delivers the vehicle to a licensed treatment facility free of charge.

Selling in from abroad

This is not a producer registration in the usual sense. The duty sits with vehicle end-holders at deregistration and treatment, not with a producer that has to register in advance.

Frequently asked questions about the Liechtenstein ELV fee

Short answers to what producers ask most.

Is there a vehicle producer register in Liechtenstein?

No. Instead an advance disposal fee is paid at first registration, which funds free end-of-life take-back.

Who pays the fee?

It is levied when a vehicle is first registered, so it falls on importers and holders.

What happens at end of life?

The last registered holder delivers the vehicle to a licensed treatment facility free of charge.

Do foreign producers register?

Not in the usual sense. The obligation sits at deregistration and treatment, not with an advance producer registration.
