Inside France's REP system
France runs more EPR schemes than almost any country in Europe, around 15 of them. SYDEREP is the French EPR producer register that ties them together, operated by ADEME, and it issues a separate identifier for every scheme you fall under.
Registration is not one act. Each scheme, called a filière REP, is its own registration with its own ID, and most producers land in several at once.
Who runs SYDEREP and what ADEME does
SYDEREP is operated by ADEME, the French agency for ecological transition, under article L.541-10-13 of the Environmental Code. ADEME is more than the register keeper.
It approves the éco-organismes that run each scheme, sets the terms of their approval, and publishes every registered producer and its identifier as open data. Anyone can search that list, so a buyer or a marketplace can confirm you are compliant before dealing with you.
Which schemes fall under SYDEREP
Because France has a filière for almost every product category, most producers fall under more than one. Find the schemes that match what you sell, then register in each.

Note: "in scope since" marks when each filière began, not when your own obligation starts. Professional packaging, for example, is in force from 2026 with first eco-contributions due mid-2026.
Do you have to register
If you are the first to place an in-scope product on the French market, yes. That covers manufacturers, importers, brand owners and distance sellers.
Because the schemes are so broad, a single producer often spans several at once. A homeware seller can be caught by packaging, furniture, electricals and toys on one catalogue.
Getting listed in SYDEREP
Registration runs through ADEME, and the identifier it issues is what proves you are compliant.
- Identify every filière your products fall under.
- Register in SYDEREP and obtain an IDU for each filière.
- Join the approved éco-organisme for each stream, or set up an approved individual system.
- Display each IDU in your terms of sale and on your website.
- Report your volumes and pay the eco-contributions for each scheme.
Your IDU
ADEME has issued the identifiant unique (IDU) since 1 January 2022, one per producer per filière. It is mandatory in your contractual documents and on your website.
Note: the exact character format is not published officially, but registered producers and their IDUs are searchable in ADEME's open data.
Overseas sellers and marketplaces
Foreign distance sellers count as producers in their own right, and France has closed the usual workaround. You can appoint a French agent (mandataire), but it does not move the legal duty off you.
The Conseil d'État ruled on 10 November 2023 that appointing a mandataire creates no subrogation, so the producer stays liable. Under article L.541-10-9, online marketplaces are themselves made responsible for their third-party sellers into France.
Costs and reporting dates
SYDEREP registration is a declaration to ADEME. The cost of compliance is the eco-contribution you pay the éco-organisme for each filière.
Each scheme sets its own tariff, eco-modulated by how recyclable the product is, and its own reporting cadence. A producer across several filières pays and reports separately for each, so check the current éco-organisme for each stream before you file.
