The field grows from 32 teams to 48, the first expansion since 1998, and the match count jumps 63% to 104 games. Those matches are spread across 16 host cities in three countries, over 39 days from mid-June to mid-July 2026.

The stadiums tell two very different stories

There is one waste category that can dwarf everything in the bins: construction and demolition waste from building the stadiums themselves. Here, 2026 and Qatar could not be more different.

  • Qatar 2022 built from scratch. Seven brand-new stadiums in the desert, plus roads, hotels and a metro line. All that concrete and steel produced a vast amount of construction waste, and its carbon was later flagged as a big part of Qatar's footprint that FIFA had understated.
  • 2026 reuses what already exists. The big American football and soccer grounds in each host city are already built, so there is almost no new construction, and the build-from-scratch waste category is close to nothing this time.

The main jobs are temporary ones instead, like laying real grass pitches over artificial turf, adding seating and fitting out broadcast areas.

Why the carbon footprint dwarfs the waste

The 10,600 tonnes of waste is not the whole environmental story. The tournament's biggest impact by far is carbon, and it sits in a completely different order of magnitude from the rubbish.

The problem was the bigger claim. FIFA branded Qatar 2022 a carbon-neutral World Cup, and in June 2023 the Swiss Fairness Commission ruled that claim misleading and unfair advertising, after complaints from six environmental groups.
