The UK's electronics and battery register
Not all UK packaging duties moved to the new service. NPWD is the UK EPR register, the National Packaging Waste Database shared by the UK environmental regulators.
It stays the register surface for electronics and batteries, even as new packaging data moves to the separate Report Packaging Data service. The Environment Agency runs it, alongside Natural Resources Wales, NIEA and SEPA.
What NPWD covers
- Electronics: active since 2014. From 12 August 2025, online marketplaces are producers for their non-UK sellers, and vapes were added with collection targets from 2026.
- Batteries: active since 2009. Portable-battery producers above one tonne a year must join a scheme by 15 October.
- Packaging: the historical register, with new UK packaging EPR data now reported through RPD.
Who has to register
Producers placing electronics, batteries or packaging on the UK market, importers included, and online marketplaces for their non-UK electronics sellers.
Joining a compliance scheme
- Confirm your stream and thresholds.
- For electronics and batteries, join a compliance scheme, which registers you in NPWD, or register directly where allowed for smaller producers.
- Non-UK marketplace operators join a scheme or appoint an authorised representative for electronics.
- Report on the scheme's cadence, and report new packaging data through RPD.
Selling in from outside the UK
For electronics, non-UK online marketplace operators must join a scheme or appoint an authorised representative. For batteries, overseas companies with a UK Companies House presence register directly. Packaging follows the RPD rules, which have no representative concept.
