Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is the rule that makes producers pay for the packaging, electronics and other goods they sell, and report each one to the right authority.
France runs the widest EPR system in Europe: around 20 separate product streams, one national register, and a sorting label the law puts on your packaging.

How EPR works in France
France has run producer responsibility longer than almost anywhere, and it now covers more product types than any other EU country. Before you weigh a tool, here is what the French system asks of you, and how one product record can feed all of it.
One register and a unique ID for each stream
France runs a single national producer register through ADEME, the environment agency. Before you place goods on the market, you register and receive an Identifiant Unique (IDU), a producer ID number, for each stream you trigger.
You get a separate IDU for packaging, for electronics, for batteries, and so on, and ADEME publishes the list so authorities and marketplaces can check that you are registered.
An éco-organisme for every stream you trigger
Registering is not the end of it. For each stream you also join an approved éco-organisme, a producer responsibility organisation that handles collection and recycling on your behalf, or you set up your own individual system.
Packaging and paper go through Citeo, electronics through ecosystem or Ecologic, textiles through Refashion. You declare your volumes to it by 31 May each year and pay an éco-contribution based on what you put on the market.
The Triman logo goes on your products
France also asks for something on the product itself. Anything sold to households has to carry the Triman logo and Info-tri sorting instructions, telling the buyer how to sort it.
It is a French labelling duty most other EU countries do not impose, so your packaging artwork becomes part of compliance, not just your paperwork.
And now PPWR sits on top of all of it
One more layer is arriving for everyone.
From 12 August 2026 the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) applies directly, France included, and adds the EU Declaration of Conformity (DoC), a signed statement backed by a technical file that your packaging meets the rules.
So a tool built for France now has to do two things: handle the established French filières, and be ready for the Declaration of Conformity.
