Where your products fall in Italy
List electronics on an Italian marketplace and the platform will look for your EPR registration number before it lets you sell. WEEE EPR in Italy is the stream where that gatekeeping is real.
Amazon extended its registration-number checks to electrical and electronic equipment in 2023, and in Italy the number has to appear on commercial documents anyway.
Say you ship electronics into Italy from a warehouse abroad. You are a producer the moment those goods are placed on the Italian market, whether you are a maker, an importer or a distance seller.
The scope is broad. Since open scope in 2018 the six categories of the Registro AEE cover almost all electrical and electronic equipment, and there is no de minimis volume.
The Registro AEE route step by step
Registration comes before the first sale, not after. You enrol at the competent Chamber of Commerce through the Registro AEE portal, which sits under RENAP, giving company data, your equipment categories, brands and expected quantities.
Once your number is issued it must appear on your commercial documents within 30 days, under article 29 of D.Lgs. 49/2014. Reporting then runs annually: you declare the equipment placed on the Italian market by category, both to the register and to your collective system.
Distance sellers and Italy
A producer without an Italian establishment registers through a written-mandate authorised representative established in Italy, and this includes distance sellers. The representative assumes your producer obligations.
The practical order matters: a distance seller must be registered in the Registro AEE before selling into Italy, not once volumes build up. Through EPR in Italy electronics is the strictest stream on this timing.
From national law to EU rules in Italy
Enforcement sits under D.Lgs. 49/2014, which implements the EU WEEE Directive, with MASE in supervision.
Placing electronics on the market without registering brings administrative penalties, and because the registration number is visible on commercial documents, a missing one is easy for buyers and platforms to spot.
Looking ahead, the European Commission opened an evaluation of the WEEE Directive in July 2025. A revision is the direction of travel, but nothing has changed in law yet, so the Italian duties above still stand. A device that is also a battery product follows batteries EPR in Italy in parallel.
Frequently asked questions about Italian WEEE EPR
The points electronics sellers raise most often about the Italian rules.
Who has to register for WEEE EPR in Italy?
Anyone who places electrical or electronic equipment on the Italian market, from makers to importers and distance sellers. Registration in the Registro AEE comes before the first sale, and there is no small-producer exemption.
How much does WEEE EPR cost in Italy?
There is a Chamber of Commerce registration fee plus a contribution to the collective system you join, which funds collection and recycling. Producers of household equipment also provide a financial guarantee. The system sets the rate, so Italy does not publish one figure.
What happens if I sell without registering?
Placing electronics on the Italian market without registering breaches D.Lgs. 49/2014 and brings administrative penalties under MASE supervision. The registration number must appear on commercial documents, so marketplaces and buyers can see when it is missing and may block listings.
Which register covers WEEE in Italy?
The Registro AEE, hosted under RENAP. You enrol at the competent Chamber of Commerce and report the equipment you place on the market there each year, alongside your collective system.
Can I handle Italy WEEE EPR from abroad?
Not directly. A producer with no Italian establishment appoints an authorised representative in Italy to hold the Registro AEE registration and reporting duties, and a distance seller must be registered before selling into Italy.
