End-of-Life Vehicles EPR in Denmark

Vehicle EPR in Denmark is a registration you complete before selling, backed by a physical take-back system rather than a scheme invoice. Uniquely, the money flows the other way, as a scrapping premium paid out when a car reaches the end of its life.

End-of-life vehicles

Over six million vehicles reach the end of their life in Europe every year, and Directive 2000/53/EC makes producers responsible for them. Vehicle manufacturers and importers fund free take-back in every EU market.

Where you register

DPA

DPA runs Denmark's single national producer register, consolidating six waste streams in one place. Producers register through virk.dk before selling into Denmark.

No certificate means the car stays yours

Without the certificate of destruction a car cannot be de-registered. It stays registered to you, and so does the liability, even after it has physically been scrapped.

Does Danish vehicle EPR apply to you

Marketing a new or used vehicle on the Danish market without a DPA registration is unlawful, so end-of-life vehicles EPR in Denmark is a gate you clear before the first sale, not a form you file afterwards.

The duty runs through EPR in Denmark on the usual trigger, placing products on the market. For vehicles it reaches you if any of these fit:

  • You import or produce M1 passenger cars or N1 vans up to 3,500 kg for the Danish market.
  • You place new or used vehicles on the Danish market, where marketing without a DPA registration is unlawful.
  • You sell into Denmark without a Danish establishment, so an authorised representative registers on your behalf.

What you pay and to whom in Denmark

Vehicles do not run on a register-and-scheme fee stack like the other streams. The money moves the other way, as a scrapping premium.

When an end-of-life passenger car or van is handed to an approved dismantler, a skrotningsgodtgørelse of 2.770 kr. is paid out. It is available for vehicles registered in Denmark after 1 July 2000.

Take-back itself is free for the last owner nationwide. Your obligation as an importer is the registration and the take-back system behind it, not a per-vehicle scheme invoice.

Before you can sell a vehicle in Denmark

Registration sits in the DPA producer register, and the certificate of destruction closes the loop at the end of a vehicle's life.

Step Where When
Register as importer or producer DPA producer register on virk.dk Before you market any vehicle
Report volumes where required DPA Annually by 31 March
Get the certificate of destruction An approved dismantler (autoophugger) At end of life to de-register

The current Danish vehicle regime dates to 2015 and sits under the vehicle-scrapping order (BEK 1654/2022).

Your reporting duties in Denmark

Vehicles are a take-back regime more than a tonnage register, so there is no classic annual quantity filing for most importers. Where periodic reporting to DPA applies, it follows the 31 March date shared with electronics and fishing gear.

The practical duty stays constant: keep your DPA registration live for as long as you place vehicles on the Danish market.

If you have no Danish establishment

An importer without a Danish establishment appoints an authorised representative to carry the registration, in line with the general Danish rule.

For EU sellers the representative registers under its own Danish CVR number. This keeps a local, accountable point for the take-back duties that come with the vehicles.

The dates ahead for vehicles in Denmark

Enforcement runs through Miljøstyrelsen and DPA under the vehicle-scrapping order, and the sharpest consequence is administrative rather than a headline fine.

The regime still rests on the 2000 EU end-of-life vehicle directive. It has set recovery targets of at least 95 percent of vehicle weight recovered and 85 percent reused or recycled since 2015.

A new EU ELV Regulation cleared the European Parliament on 18 June 2026 and is waiting for Council sign-off, so it is direction of travel, not law yet. Compare the register-based path on the sibling WEEE in Denmark page.
